De eerste telefooncentrale met 49 abonne's, op een der zolders van de Sociëteit "De Groote Club", op den hoek van Kalverstraat en Dam, en de telefoonaansluitingen werden nog door Amerikanen, onder leiding van den Ingenieur Bexter, tot stand gebracht. Directeur van de Nederlandsche onderneming was de Heer Dr. H. F. R. Hubrecht, die zich de hulp wist te verzekeren van den bekwamen en energieken technicus N. Heinzelmann, den lateren Directeur van den Gouvernements Telefoondienst in Ned.-Indië, die reeds in Zürich een telefoonnet had aangelegd. Het net in Amsterdam diende in de eerste jaren uitsluitend voor plaatselijk verkeer. Interlocale verbindingen bestonden nog niet.

The first telephone exchange with 49 subscribers, located on the attic of the club "De Groote Club", on the corner of the Kalverstraat and the Dam, and the telephone connections were yet accomplished by Americans, under the guidance of engineer Bexter. The managing director of the Dutch enterprise was mr. Dr. H. F. R. Hubrecht, who could be secure of the help of the capable and energetic technician N. Heinzelman, the later managing director of the governments telephone service in the Dutch Indies, who already installed a telephone network in Zürich. During the first years the network in Amsterdam only served local traffic.
